In this romantic comedy, a twenty-something Filipina Canadian, Iris DelaCruz (played by Hera Nalam), attempts to reconcile the traditions of her family while dating a Canadian male, Simon Friesen (played by Kristian Jordan). I Propose We Never See Each Other Again After Tonight is a Canadian Film directed by Sean Garrity that puts a unique spin on the genre.

I Propose is very well balanced, funny but not a laugh riot, touching, honest, and has good flow. Let me be clear, I do not like romantic comedies. If you are looking for a film that is simple and idealistic in its portrayal of love and relationships then know now that this story is not for you. Conscious and realistic, the film does an exceptional job of exploring the complexities of modern dating. The family of the characters are one of the aspects that I enjoyed most. The qualities of romantic comedies that I do not like revolve around the fact that the story is too often based so heavily on the relationship. The relationship becomes the main character which I find inherently problematic and also inherently simplistic. Whereas in I Propose, we see two unique and complex individuals attempting to make a relationship work. It is beautiful in its defining moments. Besides the writing, which I enjoyed greatly, the acting was also superb. Enjoyable and relaxed, so consciously Canadian in the best way.

This film is very similar to My Big Fat Greek Wedding directed by Joel Zwick. Both films are similar in their expression of a multicultural relationship. The woman in both stories comes from a strong cultural background while both men are adapting to the various traditions. While My Big Fat Greek Wedding puts a much heavier emphasis on the woman, Toula, and her family. I Propose is more balanced with the male character as well although still maintaining a slightly stronger emphasis on Iris’ life.

If you enjoy stories about culture and the complexities and hilarity that life can bring then please check this one out. Also, if you have an understanding or interest in Filipino culture then you may also really enjoy this film. The characters were very relatable and easy to empathize with which was a nice change from the standard romantic comedy. If you enjoy realistic portrayals of love and relationships that, when all is said and done, emphasize happiness through the struggle I think you will really enjoy this.
